Vispring luxury bed in a Denver bedroom

The Made-to-Measure Programme

Custom Mattresses & Beds by Vispring

Every Vispring bed is built by hand to order in Plymouth, England, which means the dimensions are yours to set, up to a maximum of one hundred inches by one hundred inches.

Why Custom Sizing Exists

Standard mattress sizes were not designed around human beings. They were designed around the economics of mass production: a small number of dimensions that could be cut, pressed and shipped at scale. For most people, they are approximately right. And approximately right is what most have learned to accept.

Vispring has never worked that way. Because every Vispring bed is handcrafted to order, a bespoke dimension is not a special case in the factory; it is simply the same process applied to different measurements. That is why Vispring has built beds to custom dimensions since 1901, and why a bed made to fit your body and your room commands a premium, rather than a fortune.

The one hundred inch ceiling

Vispring's custom programme extends to 100" × 100". That limit is not arbitrary: beyond it a hand-nested pocket spring unit cannot be built, moved and installed while holding the structural integrity that makes a Vispring a Vispring. Every size below is available; nothing above it is.

Extra-Long Custom Sizes

Standard widths carried to built-to-order lengths, for sleepers who have spent their lives with their feet over the end of the bed.

Extra-Wide Custom Sizes

Additional width for couples who share the bed with children, dogs, or simply refuse to negotiate over territory.

Grand Square Custom Sizes

Near-square proportions for primary suites large enough to treat the bed as the architecture of the room.

Named American Oversize Beds

The regional oversize formats that have entered common use in the American market, built properly.

British & European Formats

The metric formats Vispring has built in Plymouth for over a century, made available in Denver.

Who Commissions a Custom Bed

Built-to-order sizing is rarely an indulgence. In almost every case it solves a specific problem that no standard size addresses. A body that does not fit, a room that will not cooperate, or a household that sleeps differently from the one mass production imagined.

Professional athletes and very tall sleepers

A standard King is 80 inches, six foot eight. For a basketball or volleyball player standing 6'10" or 7'1", that means sleeping diagonally for a decade or simply accepting that the feet hang off. Add the pillow a tall sleeper actually needs and the usable length drops further still. This is the single most common reason a custom length is ordered, and the fix is straightforward: build the bed to the body.

Typically 76" × 96" or 76" × 100"

Architects and interior designers

When the room is drawn before the furniture is bought, the bed becomes a dimension on the plan, not a purchase made later. Designers specify a made-to-measure size to hold a symmetry: a bed that centres exactly between two windows, sits flush within an alcove, or holds a precise walkway on both sides. Four inches either way is the difference between a room that resolves and one that nearly does.

Often a square: 90" × 90" or 96" × 96"

Families who sleep together

Small children arrive at two in the morning; dogs claim the middle; a newborn stays close for the first year. Households that have accepted this would rather build for it than fight it nightly. Width is what they need; a King gives each adult roughly the width of a crib mattress once a child is between them.

Typically 84" × 84" or 96" × 80"

Awkward and historic rooms

Attic conversions with a sloped ceiling, Victorian houses with chimney breasts, apartments with a bed wall two inches short of a standard King. These rooms defeat production sizing entirely. A bespoke dimension, sometimes smaller than standard instead of larger; is frequently the only way to place a proper bed at all.

Anything from 60" × 84" upward

Couples who sleep differently

One partner tall, one not. One who wants a firm surface, one who wants to sink. Dual tension builds a different spring gauge either side of the centre line within a single continuous unit, so neither sleeper compromises and there is no join to roll into. Extra width makes the arrangement genuinely invisible.

Commonly 80" × 84" or 84" × 80"

British and European households

Clients relocating from the UK or Europe arrive with linens, bedsteads and expectations cut to metric sizes that no American manufacturer builds. Because Vispring has made these formats in Plymouth for over a century, the bed can simply be ordered in the size the rest of the household already fits.
