Who This Size Suits
Sleepers at 6'6" and above in converted attic rooms, narrow townhouse bedrooms, and guest suites where the bed must sit along the long axis of the room.
Nothing is cut down to make a 60" x 90". That distinction matters more than it sounds: a spring unit trimmed from a larger one has severed ties and a compromised perimeter, whereas one nested to 60 by 90 from the first pocket supports weight identically at the edge and the centre.
Putting 37.5 Square Feet in Perspective
At 60" x 90" this bed presents 37.5 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 11 per cent less area, 16 inches narrower and 10 inches longer.
| Size | Dimensions | Surface | vs. King |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" × 75" | 19.8 sq ft | -53% |
| Twin XL | 38" × 80" | 21.1 sq ft | -50% |
| Full | 54" × 75" | 28.1 sq ft | -33% |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | 33.3 sq ft | -21% |
| Queen Grand-Long (this size) | 60" × 90" | 37.5 sq ft | -11% |
| California King | 72" × 84" | 42 sq ft | -1% |
| King | 76" × 80" | 42.2 sq ft | 0% |
The closest production size, the Queen at 60" x 80", is where most buyers start. 37.5 square feet is where they finish, and the distance between those two figures is the whole argument for building to order.
Will It Fit? Room Dimensions and Clearance
Plan for 10' x 10'6" as the minimum. That figure, about 105 square feet. Is the 60" x 90" mattress plus 30 inches of walk-around on both sides and at the foot, plus the six inches a headboard claims from the wall.
11' x 11'6" is where this size sits properly. Below that it will still fit, but fitting and belonging are different standards, and the gap between them is about six inches per side.
Measure before you specify
Outline the 60-inch by 90-inch footprint on the floor and live with it. Clients who skip this step are the ones who call afterwards about the walkway at the foot of the bed; clients who do it tend to adjust the specification and be glad they did.
Delivery, Access & the Staircase Problem
At 90 inches this is where delivery stops being routine. A Vispring mattress cannot be bent or compressed to get it round a corner; the border stitching that makes it durable also makes it rigid. Check every doorway and every turn before ordering.
The divan base is built in 1 section, which resolves the base half of the access question. The mattress is the component that cannot be divided: a Vispring spring unit is a single hand-nested honeycomb with a hand-stitched border. It arrives whole or it does not arrive.
- Every doorway from the street to the bedroom, including the front door, which is more often the constraint than people expect.
- Stairwell diagonals; the critical figure at any change of direction, and the usual reason a delivery fails.
- Ceiling and soffit heights; 90 inches of rigid mattress needs somewhere to go when tilted.
- Lift car depth: the door width and the internal depth are different numbers; both matter.
- Contingency access. Window or balcony entry, which we can arrange where the interior route will not serve.
Dressing a 60" x 90"
Expect to have linens cut. 60" x 90" is outside every standard bedding range, so fitted sheets, flat sheets and protectors are all made to measure. We issue a dimensioned linen specification with the order to remove the guesswork.
One point specific to this width: at 60 inches, a duvet that drapes correctly should measure roughly 92 to 104 inches across, allowing a proper fall on both sides over a mattress of Vispring depth. A cover cut to the mattress width alone sits on the bed, not over it, and the difference is immediately visible.
Proportion and Presence in the Room
The 1:1.5 ratio is elongated enough that a tall headboard will exaggerate the tunnel effect. Specify a low-profile headboard and place visual weight at the sides of the room, not at the head of the bed.
A markedly long bed asks for horizontal counterweight: wide bedside tables, a bench across the foot, art hung broad, not tall.
A note on the 60" x 90"
A caution specific to this dimension: at 60 by 90 the bed is half a foot longer than it is wide by a factor of one and a half. In a room narrower than eleven feet the result can feel like a bowling lane. If the room is square, choose width instead; this size only earns its keep in a genuinely long, narrow space.
Construction: Springs, Fillings and Stitching
Nothing about a custom dimension is automated. The spring unit for a 60" x 90" is hand-nested to that exact footprint in Plymouth, each pocket spring calico-sewn and tied to its neighbours in a honeycomb with no machine equivalent. Because pocket count scales with area, 37.5 square feet carries approximately 89 per cent of the springs in a like-for-like King. Density is held constant, so the count follows the footprint.

The fillings are where the collections diverge, but the method does not: everything is teased by hand and laid across the full 37.5 square feet, then tufted through by hand. The border is finished with hand side-stitching, which on a mattress of this footprint is the difference between a usable edge and a decorative one.

Questions We Are Asked Most
Yes, proportionally. Because density does not change, 37.5 square feet carries roughly 89 per cent of the pocket springs of a standard King. Exact counts by collection to be confirmed, Vispring specification sheet
Entirely. There is no 60" x 90" sitting in a warehouse anywhere; the spring unit is nested to your dimensions from scratch. Build time to be confirmed, Vispring made-to-order schedule Your specialist confirms the schedule at sign-off.
You need 10' x 10'6" at absolute minimum, about 105 square feet, for 30-inch clearance on three sides. 11' x 11'6" is the comfortable figure. Tape the footprint on the floor before deciding.
Not off the shelf. Every order includes a written linen specification so a linen house can cut fitted sheets, flat sheets and protectors to your exact dimensions. Most clients commission two or three sets at the outset.
Yes. Original, Classic and Luxe are all available at this dimension. The collections differ in spring count, filling composition and finish instead of in the sizes they can be built to. Per-collection specification to be confirmed, Vispring dealer schedule
The limiting piece is the mattress, which is 90 inches at its longest and completely rigid. Measure the narrowest doorway and the diagonal clearance at every turn before ordering. The base is far easier, it ships in 1 section and assembles in the room.
