Who the 76" x 84" Is Built For
Couples where one partner is 6'3" to 6'6" and neither is willing to surrender the four inches of width that a California King costs.
There is a version of this bed available from manufacturers who will make anything to any size. What they cannot do is hand-nest a calico pocket spring honeycomb or side-stitch a border by hand at 76" x 84", and those two operations are the entire difference between a bed that holds its shape for decades and one that does not.
How Big Is a 76" x 84", Really?
At 76" x 84" this bed presents 44.3 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 5 per cent more area, at identical width and 4 inches longer.
| Size | Dimensions | Surface | vs. King |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" × 75" | 19.8 sq ft | -53% |
| Twin XL | 38" × 80" | 21.1 sq ft | -50% |
| Full | 54" × 75" | 28.1 sq ft | -33% |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | 33.3 sq ft | -21% |
| California King | 72" × 84" | 42 sq ft | -1% |
| King | 76" × 80" | 42.2 sq ft | 0% |
| King Extra-Long (this size) | 76" × 84" | 44.3 sq ft | +5% |
For comparison, the King at 76" x 80" is the closest standard format. Buyers usually try it first, live with it for a year or two, and arrive at a built-to-order dimension having established exactly what was missing.
Room Size, Clearance and Circulation
There is a threshold below which a large bed makes a room smaller and not grander, and for the 76" x 84" that threshold is 11'4" x 10'. Below roughly 113 square feet, the bed reads as stored, not placed.
12'4" x 11' is where this size sits properly. Below that it will still fit, but fitting and belonging are different standards, and the gap between them is about six inches per side.
Measure before you specify
Lay out the 76 by 84 footprint in tape and live around it for a few nights. The most common discovery is that the walkway at the foot of the bed is tighter than expected, a problem far easier to solve now than after delivery.
Why Access Is Settled Before the Order
84 inches is the threshold at which we start asking questions about the house instead of the room. The mattress arrives as one rigid piece. Doorways are usually fine; the turn at the top of a staircase is where these deliveries fail.
2 sections of divan base means the base is the easy part. The mattress is not divisible: hand-nested springs, hand-teased fillings and a hand-stitched border make a single structural object, and it must fit as one.
- Every doorway from the street to the bedroom, including the front door, which is more often the constraint than people expect.
- Stairwell diagonals; the critical figure at any change of direction, and the usual reason a delivery fails.
- Ceiling and soffit heights; 84 inches of rigid mattress needs somewhere to go when tilted.
- Lift car depth: the door width and the internal depth are different numbers; both matter.
- Contingency access. Window or balcony entry, which we can arrange where the interior route will not serve.
Bedding & Linens
No mass-market bedding is cut to 76" x 84". Fitted sheets, flat sheets and protectors are made to order, and a duvet sized for the nearest standard bed will sit short once mattress depth is accounted for. We supply a written linen specification with every bespoke order so any competent linen house can cut to your exact dimensions.
Get the duvet width right and the bed dresses itself: 108 to 120 inches over a 76-inch mattress. Get it wrong and no amount of styling compensates, because the cover will simply stop at the mattress edge.
The Look of a 76" x 84"
This is the gentlest custom size to live with. The width is standard, so nightstand heights, headboard proportions and room circulation all behave predictably. Only the bedding needs to be specified to order.
Conventional proportion at an unconventional size. Nothing about the shape requires rethinking. The bed reads as a bed, which is not always true of the more extreme custom dimensions.
A note on the 76" x 84"
This is the size we build most often, and the reason is simple arithmetic: it is the King you already own plus the California King length you wish it had. Clients moving from a King notice the change immediately at the feet and not at all anywhere else, because the width and therefore the room layout is untouched.
Construction: Springs, Fillings and Stitching
The spring unit is where the money goes and where the difference lives. Built by hand to 76 by 84, every pocket sewn in calico and tied to its neighbours, it produces a surface that responds independently at every point across 44.3 square feet, approximately 105 per cent of the pocket count of a standard King.

Layering is the slow part. Fleece wool, horsetail hair and cotton are hand-teased so the fibres interlock, not compact, then distributed across 44.3 square feet and hand-tufted into place. The hand-side-stitched border that follows is the reason a Vispring edge does not collapse after a decade of being sat on.

Frequently Asked Questions
Proportionally, yes. Density is fixed, so a larger footprint simply holds more pockets. At 44.3 square feet this is roughly 105 per cent of a King's count. Exact counts by collection to be confirmed, Vispring specification sheet
Yes. Dual tension builds the spring unit with a different gauge on each side of the centre line, so each sleeper gets their own support without a visible join in the sleeping surface. At 76 inches wide there is ample room for each side to behave independently.
The limiting piece is the mattress, which is 84 inches at its longest and completely rigid. Measure the narrowest doorway and the diagonal clearance at every turn before ordering. The base is far easier, it ships in 2 sections and assembles in the room.

A 76" x 84" offers 44.3 square feet against 42.2 square feet for a 76" x 80" King, 5 per cent more. It is the same width and 4 inches longer.
You need 11'4" x 10' at absolute minimum, about 113 square feet, for 30-inch clearance on three sides. 12'4" x 11' is the comfortable figure. Tape the footprint on the floor before deciding.
