Who the 72" x 90" Is Built For
Sleepers who bought a California King specifically for length and still make contact with the footboard, particularly those above 6'6".
The made-to-measure route is not exotic and it is not a favour. Vispring's factory has no production line to interrupt: every bed is built by hand at a bench, so a 72" x 90" is simply a different set of measurements handed to the same craftsperson who would otherwise be building a Queen.
What 72" x 90" Actually Means
At 72" x 90" this bed presents 45 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 7 per cent more area, 4 inches narrower and 10 inches longer.
| Size | Dimensions | Surface | vs. King |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" × 75" | 19.8 sq ft | -53% |
| Twin XL | 38" × 80" | 21.1 sq ft | -50% |
| Full | 54" × 75" | 28.1 sq ft | -33% |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | 33.3 sq ft | -21% |
| California King | 72" × 84" | 42 sq ft | -1% |
| King | 76" × 80" | 42.2 sq ft | 0% |
| California King Extra-Long (this size) | 72" × 90" | 45 sq ft | +7% |
Among standard formats the King at 76" x 80" comes nearest. Most clients who specify 72" x 90" have already ruled it out, usually on the basis of a single dimension that could not be fixed by buying a better version of the same shape.
Will It Fit? Room Dimensions and Clearance
Before the specification is finalised, measure the room. A 72" x 90" occupies its space uncompromisingly, and the minimum viable footprint including circulation is 11' x 10'6", or roughly 116 square feet.
The comfortable dimension is 12' x 11'6". That is not a luxury allowance; it is the point at which two people can pass each other at the foot of the bed without turning sideways.
Measure before you specify
Tape out 72 by 90 inches on the floor and leave it for a week. It is the single most useful thing you can do before ordering, and it routinely changes the specification. Most often by revealing that the length is more generous than required and the width less so.
The Delivery Question
At 90 inches this is where delivery stops being routine. A Vispring mattress cannot be bent or compressed to get it round a corner; the border stitching that makes it durable also makes it rigid. Check every doorway and every turn before ordering.
The divan base is built in 2 sections, which resolves the base half of the access question. The mattress is the component that cannot be divided: a Vispring spring unit is a single hand-nested honeycomb with a hand-stitched border. It arrives whole or it does not arrive.
- Front door and hallway. The entry point defeats more deliveries than the staircase does.
- Turning circles. Measure the diagonal at every corner; a 90-inch panel needs the space to swing.
- Vertical clearance. Low ceilings and pendant lights restrict how far the mattress can be tilted.
- Bedroom door approach. A door at the end of a narrow corridor is a harder problem than a wide one.
- Plan B; crane or window access, which is routine at this scale and worth pricing early.
Bedding & Linens
Plan for custom bedding. At 72" x 90" there is no off-the-shelf option, and a standard duvet will fall short over a mattress of Vispring depth. The specification sheet we provide gives a linen house everything needed to cut correctly first time.
Get the duvet width right and the bed dresses itself: 104 to 116 inches over a 72-inch mattress. Get it wrong and no amount of styling compensates, because the cover will simply stop at the mattress edge.
How a 72" x 90" Reads: Shape, Headboard, Balance
Because the width is unchanged from a Cal King, existing bedding will fit across but not down the bed. Fitted sheets must be made to order; flat sheets and duvets in Cal King sizing will run short by roughly six inches once tucked.
Longer than wide, in the ratio beds have always used. Nothing about the arrangement of the room needs rethinking, only the dimensions of the furniture around it.
A note on the 72" x 90"
The practical advantage over a 76-inch width is doorways. At 72 inches this bed shares the California King width, which passes openings that defeat a King-width mattress. For upper-floor bedrooms reached by a turning staircase, those four inches are frequently the difference between a delivery and a refund.
How the Bed Is Made
Machines can make large mattresses. They cannot hand-nest a calico pocket spring unit, which is why the edges of mass-produced oversize beds give way years before the middle does. A 72" x 90" is tied by hand across its whole 45 square feet, at roughly 107 per cent of a King's spring count.

Natural fillings are teased by hand and laid across the whole surface: wool for temperature regulation, horsetail hair for resilience and airflow, cotton for comfort, with cashmere and silk in the higher collections. Hand-tufting anchors the layers; hand side-stitching squares the border and stops the roll-off common to large machine-made mattresses.

72" x 90": Your Questions Answered
Because the spring unit is hand-nested to your footprint, not pulled from stock, and a larger surface takes proportionally more wool, hair and cotton. Price band to be confirmed, Vispring dealer schedule
Yes, proportionally. Because density does not change, 45 square feet carries roughly 107 per cent of the pocket springs of a standard King. Exact counts by collection to be confirmed, Vispring specification sheet
Yes. Dual tension builds the spring unit with a different gauge on each side of the centre line, so each sleeper gets their own support without a visible join in the sleeping surface. At 72 inches wide there is ample room for each side to behave independently.
It is built in 2 sections, assembled in the bedroom. Splitting the base solves most access problems; the mattress, being one continuous sprung structure, has to fit as it is.
All linens are made to measure at this size. We provide a dimensioned specification sheet with the order. Note the duvet should measure roughly 104 to 116 inches wide to drape correctly.
The working minimum is 11' x 10'6", roughly 116 square feet, allowing 30 inches of walk-around on both sides and at the foot plus headboard depth. We recommend 12' x 11'6" or larger.
