Why Clients Specify 100" x 80"

Large families committed to shared sleeping, and buyers who want the extreme of the built-to-order programme expressed in width, not length.

There is a version of this bed available from manufacturers who will make anything to any size. What they cannot do is hand-nest a calico pocket spring honeycomb or side-stitch a border by hand at 100" x 80", and those two operations are the entire difference between a bed that holds its shape for decades and one that does not.

Additional width for couples who share the bed with children, dogs, or simply refuse to negotiate over territory.

What 100" x 80" Actually Means

At 100" x 80" this bed presents 55.6 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 32 per cent more area, 24 inches wider and identical length.

For comparison, the King at 76" x 80" is the closest standard format. Buyers usually try it first, live with it for a year or two, and arrive at a built-to-order dimension having established exactly what was missing.

Planning the Room

Room dimensions govern this choice. A 100" x 80" needs 13'4" x 9'8" at minimum, 129 square feet or so, which accounts for 30-inch walkways on three sides and the depth the headboard takes from the wall.

We would recommend 14'4" x 10'8" or better. The extra six inches per side is the difference between edging around the bed and moving around it freely, and at this scale that distinction is felt every morning.

Measure before you specify

Tape out 100 by 80 inches on the floor and leave it for a week. It is the single most useful thing you can do before ordering, and it routinely changes the specification. Most often by revealing that the length is more generous than required and the width less so.

Why Access Is Settled Before the Order

100 inches is beyond what most homes will take by the obvious path. We survey before confirming the order, and where the stairs defeat it, which happens. The answer is usually a window entry or a crane. Both are workable; neither is improvised on the day.

The base splits into 3 sections for delivery, which is why bases rarely cause access problems. Mattresses do. There is no way to divide a hand-nested pocket spring unit without destroying the thing that makes it work.

Bedding & Linens

Expect to have linens cut. 100" x 80" is outside every standard bedding range, so fitted sheets, flat sheets and protectors are all made to measure. We issue a dimensioned linen specification with the order to remove the guesswork.

Get the duvet width right and the bed dresses itself: 132 to 144 inches over a 100-inch mattress. Get it wrong and no amount of styling compensates, because the cover will simply stop at the mattress edge.

Headboards, Symmetry and Visual Weight

This bed requires a wall of at least fourteen feet to sit correctly. The base ships in sections without exception. Note that at 100 inches wide and 80 long, reaching the centre of the bed from either side is genuinely difficult: factor this into how the bed will be made each morning.

The proportion inverts what the eye expects from a bed, and the effect is one of expansiveness, not oddity. Provided the headboard is scaled to the width rather than borrowed from a smaller bed.

A note on the 100" x 80"

A blunt practicality at maximum width: with 100 inches across and only 80 of length, the centre of this bed is roughly 50 inches from either side. That is beyond comfortable arm's reach. If the bed will be made by one person daily, consider whether 90 or 96 inches would serve you better.

At 100 inches wide this bed exceeds every standard headboard on the market, so the headboard becomes a bespoke item commissioned alongside the mattress. Vispring upholsters headboards in the same fabric ranges as the divan, and at this width we would generally advise a piece that runs wider than the mattress instead of flush to it, a headboard cut exactly to 100 inches tends to read as undersized once the bed is dressed.

How the Bed Is Made

There is no production tooling for a 100" x 80", and none is needed. The spring unit is assembled by hand to the specified footprint, pocket by pocket, exactly as every Vispring has been since 1901. Across 55.6 square feet that means approximately 132 per cent of the pocket count of an equivalent King.

Exact pocket spring counts by collection to be confirmed, Vispring custom specification sheet

After the spring unit come the fillings: British fleece wool, horsetail hair, cotton, and in the upper collections cashmere and silk, teased by hand and distributed across the whole 55.6 square feet before hand-tufting locks them in. The side-stitched border is the last hand operation and the one that determines how the bed ages.

100" x 80": Your Questions Answered

A King measures 76" x 80" and gives 42.2 square feet. This size gives 55.6 square feet, 32 per cent more, being 24 inches wider and the same length.

Made-to-measure linens cost more than catalogue sets, though less than most people assume. We supply a dimensioned specification with the order so any linen house can quote accurately, and most clients commission two or three sets at once.

Bespoke sizes are hand-built to order in England, so the bed does not exist until you commission it. Current lead time to be confirmed, Vispring custom schedule We confirm the date when the specification is signed off.

The limiting piece is the mattress, which is 100 inches at its longest and completely rigid. At this size we survey the delivery route before confirming the order, because a 90-degree stair turn will usually defeat it. The base is far easier, it ships in 3 sections and assembles in the room.

Proportionally, yes. Density is fixed, so a larger footprint simply holds more pockets. At 55.6 square feet this is roughly 132 per cent of a King's count. Exact counts by collection to be confirmed, Vispring specification sheet

The divan is built in 3 sections and pushed together in position; the join sits beneath the mattress and is not felt through it. The mattress itself is a single continuous unit.
