The Case for a 96" x 96"

Buyers who know the Alberta King by name, and families for whom the bed is genuinely shared by three or more sleepers most nights.

There is a version of this bed available from manufacturers who will make anything to any size. What they cannot do is hand-nest a calico pocket spring honeycomb or side-stitch a border by hand at 96" x 96", and those two operations are the entire difference between a bed that holds its shape for decades and one that does not.

Near-square proportions for primary suites large enough to treat the bed as the architecture of the room.

Size, Surface and Comparison

At 96" x 96" this bed presents 64 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 52 per cent more area, 20 inches wider and 16 inches longer.

Set against the King at 76" x 80", the closest thing the mass market offers, the difference is not marginal. It is the difference between a bed that almost works and one that does, and no production line makes anything in between.

Planning the Room

The floor plan decides this more than taste does. At 96" x 96" the bed requires a room of at least 13' x 11', about 143 square feet, before it stops feeling like furniture that was delivered to the wrong address.

The comfortable dimension is 14' x 12'. That is not a luxury allowance; it is the point at which two people can pass each other at the foot of the bed without turning sideways.

Measure before you specify

Outline the 96-inch by 96-inch footprint on the floor and live with it. Clients who skip this step are the ones who call afterwards about the walkway at the foot of the bed; clients who do it tend to adjust the specification and be glad they did.

Why Access Is Settled Before the Order

96 inches is beyond what most homes will take by the obvious path. We survey before confirming the order, and where the stairs defeat it, which happens. The answer is usually a window entry or a crane. Both are workable; neither is improvised on the day.

The divan base is built in 3 sections, which resolves the base half of the access question. The mattress is the component that cannot be divided: a Vispring spring unit is a single hand-nested honeycomb with a hand-stitched border. It arrives whole or it does not arrive.

Sheets, Duvets and Made-to-Measure Linen

Bedding is unusually easy at 96" x 96". Because the format is recognised, specialist linen houses stock it, and you are not obliged to commission every sheet. Over the life of the bed that convenience compounds.

A practical note on covers: 96 inches of mattress wants a duvet between 128 and 140 inches wide. Vispring mattresses are deep, and a cover that fits the surface will not reach the sides.

Headboards, Symmetry and Visual Weight

Eight feet square is an architectural decision. The room needs at least thirteen by eleven simply to hold the bed with clearance, and the headboard should be conceived as a wall treatment. Every element of bedding is made to order.

Neither dimension leads, which makes the bed unusually calm in a room. The trade-off is that a square bed exposes every misalignment around it: an off-centre light or a mismatched pair of tables will read immediately.

A note on the 96" x 96"

Eight feet square is the largest widely recognised bed size in North America, and the point at which the bed stops being furniture. Plan the headboard as a wall treatment instead of a piece of joinery: at 96 inches, anything conceived as furniture will look undersized against it.

At 96 inches wide this bed exceeds every standard headboard on the market, so the headboard becomes a bespoke item commissioned alongside the mattress. Vispring upholsters headboards in the same fabric ranges as the divan, and at this width we would generally advise a piece that runs wider than the mattress instead of flush to it, a headboard cut exactly to 96 inches tends to read as undersized once the bed is dressed.

How Vispring Builds This Size

Nothing about a custom dimension is automated. The spring unit for a 96" x 96" is hand-nested to that exact footprint in Plymouth, each pocket spring calico-sewn and tied to its neighbours in a honeycomb with no machine equivalent. Because pocket count scales with area, 64 square feet carries approximately 152 per cent of the springs in a like-for-like King. Density is held constant, so the count follows the footprint.

The fillings follow the same logic. British fleece wool, horsetail hair, cotton and, in the upper collections; cashmere and silk are hand-teased in layers across the full 64 square feet, then secured by hand-tufting. The border is side-stitched by hand: a row of stitches drawn through the mattress edge that holds the sidewall upright and prevents the roll-off that afflicts machine-finished mattresses at scale.

Questions We Are Asked Most

Yes; dual tension is specified at the point of order and the spring unit is built with a different gauge either side of the centre line. At 96 inches wide each side is generous enough that neither sleeper meets the transition.

It is built in 3 sections, assembled in the bedroom. Splitting the base solves most access problems; the mattress, being one continuous sprung structure, has to fit as it is.

You need 13' x 11' at absolute minimum, about 143 square feet, for 30-inch clearance on three sides. 14' x 12' is the comfortable figure. Tape the footprint on the floor before deciding.

Entirely. There is no 96" x 96" sitting in a warehouse anywhere; the spring unit is nested to your dimensions from scratch. Build time to be confirmed, Vispring made-to-order schedule Your specialist confirms the schedule at sign-off.

A custom dimension carries a premium over the equivalent catalogue size, reflecting the hand-nesting of a spring unit built to your measurements and the additional natural fillings a larger surface requires.
