Which Sleepers Choose a 90" x 90"

Primary suites of roughly 250 square feet and above, where the bed is intended to read as the principal feature.

The economics are worth stating plainly. A bespoke dimension costs more than the equivalent catalogue size because the spring unit is nested to order and the fillings are teased across a larger surface. It does not cost dramatically more, because hand-building to order is what Vispring already does for every bed it makes.

Near-square proportions for primary suites large enough to treat the bed as the architecture of the room.

Putting 56.3 Square Feet in Perspective

At 90" x 90" this bed presents 56.3 square feet of sleeping surface. Set against the 42.2 square feet of a standard 76" × 80" King, that is 33 per cent more area, 14 inches wider and 10 inches longer.

Twin XL 38" × 80" 21.1 sq ft -50%

Among standard formats the King at 76" x 80" comes nearest. Most clients who specify 90" x 90" have already ruled it out, usually on the basis of a single dimension that could not be fixed by buying a better version of the same shape.

The Floor Plan Comes First

Before the specification is finalised, measure the room. A 90" x 90" occupies its space uncompromisingly, and the minimum viable footprint including circulation is 12'6" x 10'6", or roughly 131 square feet.

If the room allows 13'6" x 11'6", take it. The additional clearance is disproportionately valuable at large sizes, because the walk-around is where a big bed either works or becomes an obstacle.

Measure before you specify

Mark the 90-inch by 90-inch footprint on the bedroom floor with painter's tape before committing. Live with the outline for a few days. Almost every client who does this adjusts their specification, usually up in width and down in length, which is the correction most people need and few anticipate.

Getting a 90" x 90" Into the House

The largest component measures 90 inches, past the point where access can be assumed. Vispring mattresses are hand-side-stitched and do not flex, the mattress must physically pass through every opening on the route. Measure the narrowest doorway, the stair width, and above all the diagonal clearance at any 90-degree turn.

The base arrives in 2 sections and is assembled in the room. The mattress cannot be treated the same way; Vispring's construction method produces one continuous sprung unit, which is precisely why the bed lasts and precisely why delivery needs planning.

Dressing a 90" x 90"

Bedding is made to order at this size; there is no catalogue equivalent. Most clients commission two or three sets at the outset, which is more economical than ordering singly and means the bed is never out of service waiting on linen.

A practical note on covers: 90 inches of mattress wants a duvet between 122 and 134 inches wide. Vispring mattresses are deep, and a cover that fits the surface will not reach the sides.

How a 90" x 90" Reads: Shape, Headboard, Balance

Ninety inches square is the point where the bed is best approached from three sides. Leave a genuine walkway at the foot, thirty-six inches and not thirty, because the visual mass of a square this size makes a tight foot walkway feel considerably tighter than the measurement suggests.

A square footprint reads as a decision and not a default. It needs symmetry to work, but given symmetry, it is the most composed proportion a bedroom can have.

A note on the 90" x 90"

Of all the squares in this range, 90 by 90 is the one we would call best-judged. It is unmistakably a grand bed without the architectural commitment of eight feet square, and at seven and a half feet each way it still fits rooms that were not purpose-built around it.

At 90 inches wide this bed exceeds every standard headboard on the market, so the headboard becomes a bespoke item commissioned alongside the mattress. Vispring upholsters headboards in the same fabric ranges as the divan, and at this width we would generally advise a piece that runs wider than the mattress instead of flush to it, a headboard cut exactly to 90 inches tends to read as undersized once the bed is dressed.

How the Bed Is Made

There is no production tooling for a 90" x 90", and none is needed. The spring unit is assembled by hand to the specified footprint, pocket by pocket, exactly as every Vispring has been since 1901. Across 56.3 square feet that means approximately 133 per cent of the pocket count of an equivalent King.

Exact pocket spring counts by collection to be confirmed, Vispring custom specification sheet

The fillings are where the collections diverge, but the method does not: everything is teased by hand and laid across the full 56.3 square feet, then tufted through by hand. The border is finished with hand side-stitching, which on a mattress of this footprint is the difference between a usable edge and a decorative one.

Questions We Are Asked Most

Not off the shelf. Every order includes a written linen specification so a linen house can cut fitted sheets, flat sheets and protectors to your exact dimensions. Most clients commission two or three sets at the outset.

You need 12'6" x 10'6" at absolute minimum, about 131 square feet, for 30-inch clearance on three sides. 13'6" x 11'6" is the comfortable figure. Tape the footprint on the floor before deciding.

Proportionally, yes. Density is fixed, so a larger footprint simply holds more pockets. At 56.3 square feet this is roughly 133 per cent of a King's count. Exact counts by collection to be confirmed, Vispring specification sheet

Nothing is held in stock at this dimension: the bed is begun when you order it and built by hand in Plymouth. Current lead time to be confirmed, Vispring bespoke schedule We give you a firm date once the specification is agreed.

Yes. Dual tension builds the spring unit with a different gauge on each side of the centre line, so each sleeper gets their own support without a visible join in the sleeping surface. At 90 inches wide there is ample room for each side to behave independently.
