Conventional mattresses need chemical flame barriers because polyurethane burns. Wool does not, so a Vispring meets the same standards with no added treatment. The rest of the bed is horsetail hair, cotton, calico and steel, put together by hand.
Why It Is Made Slowly
Vispring has made beds in Plymouth since 1901. The work is manual: springs pocketed in calico and hand-tied into a honeycomb, fillings teased apart by hand and laid in layers, borders stitched through by hand. A single bed passes through a number of pairs of hands and no production line.
