The Materials
Foam mattresses off-gas because of what they are: polyurethane, adhesives and the flame barriers required to make them safe. A Vispring is built from wool, horsehair, cotton and steel, assembled by hand, and tufted rather than glued. There is very little in it that can off-gas, which is what an independent toxicity ranking picks up.
